Grammy Nominations: All You Need To Know
2024's nominations are led by SZA (9) & Phoebe Bridgers (7), but what did the Recording Academy miss?
The 2024 Grammy Nominations were unveiled this morning. The Recording Academy is set to host the next ceremony on February 4th, 2024 in Los Angeles.
As it happens every year, we’re here to shed some light on the 2024 Grammy Nomination Snubs and Surprises. This year, the eligibility period for nominations was Oct 1, 2022-September 15, 2023.
If you don’t know - Record of the Year deals with the specific recording of a song (production), whereas Song of the Year is more focused on the composition of the song (songwriting).
For the Best New Artist category, no surprise to see the likes of Ice Spice, Noah Kahan, and Gracie Abrams. Some of you might be confused as to why someone who’s been making music for years (Kahan) is suddenly a BNA nominee. The Recording Academy lists these current rules, as well as establishes screening committees to determine whether or not an artist had attained a breakthrough in a prior year or if they are eligible for the current year.
Must have released a minimum of five singles/tracks or one album (until 2020 there was a maximum of 30 singles/tracks or three albums, but this maximum limit was removed for the 2021 awards season)
May not have entered into this category more than three times, including as a performing member of an established group. (An artist’s record label normally submits them to these categories).
Must have achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and impacted the musical landscape during the eligibility period.
SNUBS:
Incredibly disappointed in the lack of inclusion of Renee Rapp for Best New Artist. Maybe next year? Also - PinkPantheress. She is the brains behind boys a liar and I think she honestly deserves to be there with ice! Same with Laufey too…. :(
Along those lines, Boys A Liar pt. 2 was completely snubbed. One of the biggest songs of the year from 2 new up-and-coming artists, it’s an unfortunate miss from the academy
Zach Bryan deserved some love in a major category. He’s had such a phenomenal year and I figured I Remember Everything would be a shoo-in since Musgraves has won many Grammys in the past.
Daniel Ceasar - completely shut out of all R&B categories. Yikes.
Kali Uchis - Not a single nom for having one the best R&B albums of the year
Teezo Touchdown I thought was a SURE bet for getting a Best New Artist Nomination, maybe next year.
I’m the only one to say this but BIA got snubbed from rap categories. She has been quietly dropping gold all year and no one wants to recognize it.
SURPRISES:
boygenius slaying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We think the record and its songs are absolutely deserving but it is quite a shock that they were able to snag so many, especially Not Strong Enough in Record and Cool About It in Alternative Song.
Karma ft. Ice Spice is nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. That is ridiculous but whatever. It made me laugh. I do LOVE the inclusion of Ghost In The Machine by SZA & Phoebe in this category. Great sleeper pick.
Olivia got a nomination for Best Rock Song for Ballad of A Homeschooled Girl. Love that a lot.
Miley. Don’t get me wrong, we love Endless Summer Vacation but are pretty surprised at the number of nominations, including Album Of The Year
No rap or country in any of the big categories is pretty interesting. Not really sure what I would expect to deserve a nomination (UTOPIA, Her Loss don’t really deserve it), but might make sense for Luke Combs or Morgan Wallen to sneak in somewhere with such huge years.
WOMEN! It’s clear one theme from the 2024 nominations is that the academy has recognized mostly women in most major categories, with Jon Batiste being the only man recognized in the big 3 (ROTY, SOTY, AOTY). As they should, it’s the right thing to do in the year of the Barbie movie.
Speaking of Barbie, in the songs written for visual media, 4/5 of Noms go to Barbie movies (Barbie World, What Was I Made For, Dance The Night, and I’m Just Ken - making Ryan Gosling a first-time nominee.)
Victoria Monet - she racked up the nominations this year including BNA and ROTY for On My Mama. Monet is the hit songwriter behind Ariana Grande’s biggest songs including Thank U, Next, 34+35, and 7 Rings.
I’m kind of SHOCKED that Utopia received a nomination for best rap album. I mean there wasn’t much else but I would have preferred to see Westside Gunn, Earl Sweatshirt, or The Alchemist here.
Leading up to February, Pop Lobster will be working through all nominated albums and posting reviews of each, so make sure you are subscribed and follow along. Linked below are some albums we’ve already reviewed.
